Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique is a simple and practical self-help method, taught in one-to-one lessons, which helps you to move more freely and easily.

What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is a simple and practical self-help method, taught in one-to-one lessons, which helps you to move more freely and easily. The Technique works by helping you to identify and prevent the harmful postural habits that may be the cause of stress and pain. You learn to re-establish the natural relationship between the head, the neck and the back by releasing unnecessary tension, helping yourself to rediscover balance of mind and body.

You gain increased awareness, enabling you to change long-standing habits of movement and to function more efficiently, with greater ease and poise. You learn to use this new understanding and skill in the more complex and demanding activities of your daily life, to improve how you move, perform, look and feel.

What can the Alexander Technique treat?
The Alexander Technique helps you to naturally overcome back, neck and joint pain, muscle tension and stiffness, poor posture, anxiety and stress-related conditions, breathing and vocal problems.

The Technique can help those wishing to improve their performance, for example runners and other athletes; musicians, singers and actors; dancers; and teachers.

Going for a lesson
In an Alexander lesson, your teacher will use gentle hands-on guidance and verbal explanations to help you find ease and balance within yourself in simple movements and everyday activities such as sitting, standing, walking, bending and lying down. Comfortable clothing is best to wear, and lessons take place with shoes removed.

How many lessons will I need?
The number of Alexander lessons you take can be discussed with your Alexander teacher, and depends on your particular needs and goals.

Alexander Technique for children
Children have one-to-one Alexander lessons for many of the same reasons as adults. In addition, the Technique has been found useful in the management of growth-related problems such as scoliosis and Scheuermann's disease, and in simply helping children to feel more comfortable during periods of rapid growth.

What will it all cost?
Your first lesson costs from £35.00 and subsequent lessons cost from £30.00.
