I am a fully qualified, BACP accredited, counsellor and counselling supervisor with a wide range of experience. I qualified with a Diploma in counselling in 2002 and a Certificate in Counselling Supervision in 2009. I am also a fully qualified and experienced Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA).
I am registered and accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP www.bacp.co.uk) and work within their ethical framework (http://www.bacp.co.uk/ethical_framework/)
After many years of experience in other parts of the world and other types of work, I came back to the UK and trained as a Person Centred therapist, qualifying in Carlisle in 2002. I have practised ever since, in a variety of settings which have included Cumbria Constabulary, Lakes College, general practice in a GP surgery, Self Injury Support and several services helping individuals affected by sexual abuse, sexual assault and domestic abuse as well as private practice.
Person Centred therapy is a talking therapy which is rooted in the belief in the client's potential and ability to make the right choices for him or her self, regardless of the therapist's own values, beliefs and ideas.
I also bring to my practice my experience, training and personal practice of Mindfulness, all of which are ongoing. I also bring practice from my training in the Compassionate Mind approach to emotional and psychological distress (Compassion Focused Therapy) which some find helpful in changing their experience of anxiety or feelings of guilt or shame.
Although clients have brought a wide range of problems and types of distress to my practice over the years, it is the person I hope to meet first, not the 'problem'.
